#hashtags

There's lots of Twitter traffic about cycle safety in London. Would the LOB 'message' be more effective if we all use a limited range of hashtags, mabe even just one, in campaign-related tweets?

For example, hashtags currently in circulation include:

  • #LOB
  • #CycleVote
  • #BikeVote
  • #VoteBike
  • #CycleSafe
  • #LoveLondonGoDutch

Infrastructure improvements needed to sustain growth and provide safer cycling

Pre-Olympic 'sports' funding has been based on legacy KPIs measuring increases in participation not infrastructure improvements, hence schemes focus on growing the number of new cyclists rather than creating a safer environment to encourage a life-long love of cycling, e.g.

  • Barclays Cycle Hire Scheme - 8300 bikes from March 8
  • Cycle Grants for Schools - "helping 71 schools ... buy bikes ..."
  • The Big Pedal - "will aim to get children in 1000 schools cycling for one million bike-to-school miles"
  • Summer of Cycling - "those taking part in events would be encouraged to bring one other person along"

Cycling is probably the only 'sport' where 'amateurs' take part in an essentially hostlile environment compared to 'professionals' - i.e commuting on the public highway.

The LCC 'Love London, Go Dutch' campaign offers a practical solution, and LOB's campaign will help push it up the Mayoral manifestos.

With only three months to the election suggest LOB sets KPIs and 'raises the bar' for candidates against a list of achievable and desireable outcomes for safer cycling in London - setting a minimum 'qualifying' standard - rather than allow each candidate to play a 'wait and see' game.

Mayor should run safty campaign for Boris Bikers

No helmets, wobbling all over the road, riding on pavements etc. Boris bikers are a hazard (one got killed last week).

Each parking bay should have safety and road usage guidance (in many languages).

Road repairs

Take cyclists needs into account when repairing roads.  Less cracks/potholes/lumpy tarmac/sunken drain covers at the edges of the road where it doesn't matter to car drivers would make cycling much more pleasant.

Education

Educate all road users to be aware of and considerate of cyclists.

Educate cyclists to reciprocate.

Enforce ASLs (but also cyclists stopping for red lights)

Design infrastructure to the guidlines

LTN 02/08 provides a reasonable standard to which cycle infrastrure should be designed.  The mayor should insist all facilities are designed to this standard, if not higher.

What do you want?

"Better Conditions for Cyclists" is too nebulous and open to opposing interpretations. LOB will need a clear statement of goals to be effective.

School's Notice boards.

Most schools are pretty hacked off with the empty School Travel Plan paperwork excercise... They may support a move for real change.

Commuter leafleting

Hard work but a cordon across commuter routes will pick up potential recruits who are not doing online. Twitter and FB miss a big chunk of folks.

If there's room for carparking, there's room for a cycle lane

It's just a question of priorities.

But, if there is kerbside parking, or two lanes, then there is room for good separated cycle lanes.

Allow all one way backstreets to be 2-way for cyclists

Many backstreets have been made one-way to avoid rat-running by motorists.  This issue is irrelevant to cyclists.  There should be a presumption in favour of all backstreets being two-way to cyclists.  This will keep cyclists off main roads.

A pledge for cycle training for any road user prosecuted for incidents involving cyclists

Everyone can benefit from a bit of training.  Nomoreso than anyone prosecuted in incidents involving cyclists, be they drivers, pedestrians or cyclists.

I'd like for mayoral candidates to pledge to encourage the MET and other police forces to force people to choose between prosecution or undertaking cycle training (should they not already have done so) in any incidents surronding cycling.

This could stretch from accidents, fatal or otherwise to cyclists being ticketed for offenses such as red light jumping, or even motorists stopping in Advanced Stop Line boxes.

Why I feel this is important is because ignorance of why people cycle and what is best practice is fairly common to spot across all road users.  By building greater understanding, those who are being prosecuted will also be less likely to blame cyclists in general, or 'the law' for their punishment.
